3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Our film The Seeking is an independent film – this means that it was produced outside of the major film studio system, and less than 50% of the funding came from the big six production companies. However, as we recieved no funding from these companies our production was completely independent, meaning that we were able to make our own decisions. Screening this in major cinemas may be difficult because it may not get as much attention as major productions, so we decided to use Independent Production companies to distribute our film.

Distribution: The process through which a movie is made available to watch for an audience by a film distributor.
  • Peak Productions – This is an independent company that we chose to produce our film. The name and logo of this production company was used to give the illusion of the top of a hill/mountain, therefore signifying that their productions are of the highest standard and quality. This idea was inspired by popular, successful production companies such Summit Entertainment and Paramount.
  • Goldcrest – This distribution company is popular in places such as London and America, which allowed us to reach a larger target audience than the production company mentioned above. Goldcrest have created high expectations of the Independent films they distribute, meaning that viewers are more likely to watch. Examples of other films are The Iron Lady (2011) and Cass (2008).

We have also taken advantage of the amount of social media sites that are free for us to
use, and allow us to reach a much larger audience. As we have a target audience of those between 15-18, this method is extremely effective to reach the specific age range we want. Examples of these are:
  • Youtube – This website allows us to upload our video onto the internet for free. This is an extremely popular website concerning those who were our target audience, and allowed us to tag our video with key words to help people find it. On this website, people can like and comment on the video, allowing us to receive feedback on how popular the video is.
  • Twitter – We used this website to give a direct link to Youtube – the website mentioned above. Here people can reply to the link to give feedback, and we can promote this link by using appropriate hashtags.

  • Vimeo - Another video sharing website, free of charge.

  • Facebook – We also shared our production on Facebook, which is again an extremely popular website with the age range we wanted to reach. This again allows people to like and comment, meaning we can receive feedback.
Other methods of distribution could be:

  • Film Festivals - This is where films are presented for an extended period of time, and usually takes place in one or two cinemas. Popular examples of film festivals that stream independent productions are Sundance Film Festival, Austin Film Festival and Raindance film festival (UK).
  • DVDs
  • Television
  • Films on iTunes
  • Theatrical Release
  • Merchandise.
